About Course

This course provides learners with a practical, trauma-informed approach to safeguarding children, young people, and adults at risk. It explores how trauma impacts behaviour, decision-making, communication, engagement, and risk. Learners will develop skills to ensure safeguarding responses are empathetic, safe, and effective.

What the course covers

  • Understanding trauma: types of trauma (single-incident, chronic, complex, developmental and intergenerational), trauma versus stress, and fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses.
  • Trauma and behaviour: why traumatised people can seem challenging or resistant, and the links between trauma, exploitation, avoidance and risk-taking.
  • Trauma-informed principles: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, empowerment and cultural sensitivity in safeguarding conversations.
  • Communication: curiosity without interrogation, grounding and de-escalation, and language to avoid.
  • Re-traumatisation: how systems and processes can cause harm, trauma-informed risk evaluation, multi-agency working and defensible decision-making.
  • Responding to concerns: how trauma affects disclosure, indicators of exploitation and grooming, recording, escalation and trauma-aware safety planning.

Who it’s for

Safeguarding practitioners, teachers and SEN staff, social and family support workers, youth workers and mentors, foster and residential carers, health and early help teams, police and community safety staff, and voluntary sector workers. No previous trauma training is needed.

How it works

Six self-paced modules with case studies, scenario activities and reflective tasks, plus downloadable tools including a trauma-informed safeguarding checklist, communication scripts and a risk assessment template. A final assessment (pass mark 70%, two attempts) leads to a CPD certificate of completion.

Course Content

Module 1 — Understanding Trauma
This module introduces what trauma is and how it affects the brain, body and behaviour. Learners explore the different types of trauma (single-incident, chronic, complex, developmental and intergenerational), the difference between trauma and everyday stress, the fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses, and why behaviour should be understood as communication.

  • Lesson 1.1: What Is Trauma?
  • Lesson 1.2: Types of Trauma
  • Lesson 1.3: Trauma vs Stress
  • Lesson 1.4: How Trauma Affects the Brain: Fight, Flight, Freeze and Fawn
  • Lesson 1.5: Behaviour as Communication
  • Lesson 1.6: Video: The Brain Under Stress
  • Lesson 1.7: Quick Check: Matching Behaviours to Trauma Responses
  • Lesson 1.8: Reflective Task: What Might Be Happening Internally?
  • Module 1 Knowledge Check

Module 2 — Trauma and Behaviour in Safeguarding
This module explores why traumatised children and adults may appear challenging or resistant, and how trauma is linked to exploitation, avoidance and risk-taking. Learners consider the role of triggers, sensory overload, shame, fear and mistrust in engagement, and apply their learning to a short case study.

Module 3 — Principles of Trauma-Informed Practice
This module sets out the six principles of trauma-informed practice: safety; trustworthiness and transparency; choice; collaboration; empowerment; and cultural, gender and lived-experience sensitivity. Learners explore how to use these principles in safeguarding conversations, avoid power-based interactions and apply professional curiosity through a trauma lens.

Module 4 — Communication with Traumatised Individuals
This module focuses on communicating with people who have experienced trauma. It covers the do’s and don’ts of trauma-informed communication, using curiosity without interrogation, de-escalation and grounding techniques, managing emotional distress safely and the language to avoid because it blames, minimises or triggers.

Module 5 — Trauma, Safeguarding & Re-traumatisation
This module examines how systems and processes can unintentionally re-traumatise people. Learners explore the barriers created by rigid processes and deadlines, trauma-informed risk evaluation, working with partners who may not be trauma-informed, and how to escalate cases and make defensible decisions.

Module 6 — Responding to Trauma-Linked Safeguarding Concerns
This module brings learning together to respond to trauma-linked safeguarding concerns. It covers how trauma affects disclosure, indicators of exploitation, grooming and coercion, trauma-informed safeguarding pathways, recording and reporting, the duty to intervene and escalate, and building safety plans that take trauma into account.

Final Assessment
A 20-question assessment covering all six modules. You need 70% to pass and receive your CPD certificate of completion.
