The Ripple Effect

About Course

Knife crime is a pressing issue affecting young people, families, and communities across the UK. The Ripple Effect course is designed to provide a clear, factual, and judgment-free exploration of why young people carry knives, the consequences of such choices, and practical strategies to stay safe. Using interactive lessons, reflective activities, and real-life examples, learners gain insight into the social, emotional, and environmental pressures that can influence risky behaviour.

Through this course, learners will explore the root causes of knife crime, including peer pressure, gang influence, family breakdown, fear, and limited opportunities. They will understand how individual decisions can ripple out to affect friends, family, and the wider community, highlighting the importance of safe and responsible choices. The course also addresses the legal and personal consequences of carrying a knife, including criminal records, prison sentences, and long-term impacts on education, employment, and travel.

Learners will develop practical skills in conflict resolution, decision-making, and seeking support. Engaging activities such as polls, scenario-based questions, and reflective exercises encourage self-awareness and personal commitment to positive choices. The course culminates in a personal action plan, empowering learners to translate their learning into real-life decisions that protect themselves and those around them.

Created by FOS Coaching in collaboration with IIFAL, this course is self-paced and fully interactive, making it suitable for young people aged 11–19, teachers, youth workers, and mentors. By the end of the course, learners will not only understand the risks and realities of knife crime but will also be equipped to make safe choices and influence others positively, truly embodying the concept of the ripple effect.

Course Content

Module 1: Understanding the Ripple
Module 1: Understanding the Ripple introduces learners to the complex factors that influence knife crime. Through exploring perceptions, motivations, outside pressures, and deeper root causes, learners gain a clear understanding of why young people may carry knives. The module also introduces the 5 Fs Framework—Funds, Family, Failure, Friends/Gangs, and Fear—as a practical tool to identify risk factors and safer alternatives. Interactive activities, polls, and reflective exercises help learners connect these concepts to their own communities and personal experiences, laying the foundation for informed decision-making in later modules.

Module 2: Consequences – The Ripple Effect
This module helps learners understand the legal, emotional, and societal consequences of knife crime, highlighting how one decision can impact the individual, their peers, and the wider community. The “Ripple Effect” metaphor reinforces that choices do not exist in isolation — every action creates a chain reaction affecting multiple lives.

Module 3: Skills for Safe Choices:
Skills for Safe Choices helps learners develop practical strategies to make safe decisions, manage conflicts, and reflect on their personal choices. Through scenario-based activities, learners practise recognising safe alternatives, identifying trusted adults, and walking away from risky situations. The module also uses a poetic reflection to show how one choice can create a ripple effect on others, encouraging empathy and self-awareness. Finally, learners make a personal pledge to commit to safer behaviours, reinforcing accountability and long-term positive decision-making.

Module 4: Support & Getting Help
Module 4 equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify and access trusted support networks, seek help safely, and maintain personal safety in challenging or high-pressure situations. It introduces local services, helplines, and school-based support, guiding learners on how to communicate concerns and take proactive steps to protect themselves and others. Through interactive exercises, reflective prompts, and practical strategies, young people gain confidence, build awareness of available resources, and learn how their actions can influence their own safety and the wellbeing of those around them.

Module 5: Final Review & Certification – Summary
Module 5 brings together all the learning from previous modules, allowing learners to consolidate their understanding of knife crime awareness, decision-making, conflict resolution, and safety strategies. Through a self-marking 15-question quiz, learners can test their knowledge across multiple formats, including multiple-choice, true/false, and drag-and-drop activities, with an 80% pass threshold to earn their certificate. The module also encourages personal reflection, prompting learners to consider how they will apply the skills and knowledge in their own lives. Finally, the course concludes with a motivational message, reinforcing that every choice has consequences and empowering learners to make safe, responsible decisions moving forward.
