About Course

This course helps learners develop the reading skills required for Functional Skills English Entry Level 2. Learners will explore a variety of everyday texts and learn how to identify their purpose, locate key information, understand vocabulary, and recognise main ideas.

Throughout the course, learners will build confidence in using organisational features such as headings, subheadings, lists, and images to find information quickly. They will also develop strategies for understanding unfamiliar words through context and identifying important facts within texts.

The course concludes with preparation for the Functional Skills English Entry Level 2 Reading assessment, enabling learners to apply their skills effectively and confidently.

Course Content

Module 1: Finding Purpose and Main Ideas
Learners will identify the purpose of simple texts and recognise the main ideas presented. They will practise extracting key messages from a range of everyday reading materials.

Module 2: Navigating Texts with Organisational Features
Learners will explore how headings, subheadings, bullet points, labels, and other organisational features help readers locate information quickly and efficiently.

Module 3: Understanding Sentences with Shared Meaning
Learners will learn how different words and phrases can communicate similar meanings and how this supports understanding when reading different types of texts.

Module 4: Decoding Vocabulary and Context Clues
Learners will develop strategies for understanding unfamiliar words by using surrounding text, visual cues, and prior knowledge.

Module 5: Finding the Facts
Learners will practise locating specific information in straightforward texts and distinguishing factual information from other content.

Module 6: Mastering the Reading Assessment
Learners will review all key reading skills covered in the course and complete assessment-style activities to build confidence and prepare for the Functional Skills English Entry Level 2 Reading examination.
