IIFAL Functional Skills English Entry Level 1 Writing supports learners in developing the essential writing skills needed for everyday life, work and community participation. This course introduces the foundations of written communication, helping learners write simple words, phrases and short sentences with increasing accuracy and confidence.

Learners practise forming letters correctly, spelling familiar words from the Entry Level word lists, and writing clear sentences that convey basic information. The course also develops understanding of simple punctuation, including capital letters and full stops, and supports learners in sequencing ideas in a logical order.

Through guided tasks, practical activities and real‑life writing scenarios, learners learn how to complete short forms, write simple messages, and produce short pieces of writing on familiar topics. The course provides a supportive, accessible pathway for adults who are beginning their writing journey or returning to learning after time away from education.

Course Content

Module 1: Alphabet Mastery and Case Recognition
This module helps learners build the essential foundations of writing by mastering the alphabet in both upper and lower case. Learners practise correct letter formation, spacing and handwriting control, developing confidence in writing clearly and legibly. The module also introduces when and why capital letters are used, helping learners recognise them in words, names and simple sentences. By the end of the module, learners will be able to form letters accurately, distinguish between cases and begin writing simple words with improved clarity.

The module strengthens sentence structure, vocabulary choice and the use of capital letters and full stops. By the end of the module, learners will be able to write short, friendly pieces of writing that communicate personal information clearly and appropriately for everyday social situations.

Module 4: Exam Techniques and Final Composition
This module prepares learners for the Entry Level 1 Writing controlled assessment. Learners practise writing short compositions similar to those used in the exam, focusing on clarity, accuracy and meeting the task requirements. They review key skills such as spelling familiar words, using capital letters and full stops, and organising ideas into simple sentences. The module also introduces exam strategies, including planning, checking and improving written work. By the end, learners will feel confident and ready to complete the assessment successfully.
