About Course

Understanding How Your Body Works is a short, self-paced CPD course designed specifically for dancers, dance teachers, instructors and performing arts practitioners.

Course Content

Module 1 — Know Your Body
Your body is your most important instrument as a dancer. The more you understand how your body is structured and how it produces movement, the better equipped you are to train safely, move efficiently and make informed decisions about your dance practice. In this module, you will explore the basic structures involved in movement and develop an understanding of how bones, muscles and joints work together. You will also consider how alignment, balance and control influence the way you move. The aim is not to turn you into an anatomist. It is to develop body awareness — helping you understand what your body is doing, why it matters and how you can look after it.

  • Lesson 1.1 — Your Body: The Dancer’s Instrument
  • Lesson 1.2 — Bones, Muscles and Joints
  • Lesson 1.3 — How Movement Happens
  • Lesson 1.4 — Alignment, Balance and Control
  • Module 1 — Know Your Body: True or False Knowledge Check

Module 2 — Prepare Your Body
Preparing your body for dance is not simply about doing a few stretches before the music starts.A good preparation routine helps you gradually move from rest into activity. It prepares your muscles, joints, cardiovascular system, coordination and nervous system for the demands of dance.Preparation also needs to continue beyond the warm-up. Mobility, flexibility, strength, recovery and appropriate training all contribute to dance longevity.

Module 3 — Look After Your Body
Being a dancer is not only about what happens during a dance class or performance. What you do between sessions can have a significant impact on how your body feels and performs.Long periods of sitting, inadequate recovery, poor sleep, excessive training and ignoring changes in your body can all affect your ability to dance effectively.Looking after your body means learning to recognise what it needs and making sensible choices that support health, performance and longevity.

Module 4 — Dance for the Long Term
Being a dancer is not only about what your body can do today. It is also about what you want your body to be able to do in five, ten, twenty or more years.Dance can be a lifelong relationship with movement. However, maintaining that relationship requires more than talent and technique. It requires awareness, preparation, strength, mobility, recovery and healthy habits. The aim of this module is to help you think beyond your next class, rehearsal or performance and consider how the choices you make now can support your future as a dancer.

Final Knowledge Check
This final knowledge check assesses your understanding of the key principles covered throughout Understanding How Your Body Works. You will be asked questions about body awareness, movement, warm-up, flexibility, mobility, strength, recovery, injury prevention and training for long-term dance health.Use the knowledge check to reflect on what you have learned and how you can apply these principles to your own dance practice.
